Genetic Counseling Research and Education Endowed Fund

We raised $30,645 to establish the Genetic Counseling Research and Education Endowed Fund! Thanks to our generous donors, this endowment will provide financial support for students in perpetuity as a source of renewing funds to advance the future of genetic counseling.

Match Day and Exciting Fund News

April 23, 2021

Today is Match Day. Across the country, future genetic counselors are finding out which schools they will be attending as the Class of 2023. We are excited to welcome our future friends, alumni and colleagues into the program.

This Match Day is particularly exciting, since the Class of 2023 will NEVER know their graduate experience without the UT Genetic Counseling Research & Education Fund. We are excited to share that the fund was fully endowed on Giving Day, when over $5,000 was raised in just one day.

The next steps are diving in with our fabulous donor development team here at UT, as well as the UTGCP leadership to work on a distribution pathway. Updates on grants will be posted here, as well as on social media, as appropriate.

In the meantime, please continue to give. The more that is in the fund, the more opportunities we have to support students during their graduate training.

As always, thank you for your support.

Thank you for your support in 2020

March 31, 2021

2020 was a year like no other. It is hard to believe that a year could have gone so fast and so slow all at the same time. The students and program faculty figured out a way to close out their year, so that the students could graduate and become part of the healthcare workforce. Our alumni pivoted to telemedicine or working with PPE, always keeping patients top of mind during times of uncertainty. With all that was going on within our workplaces, our homes and with our patients, we took a small break from fundraising.

Once we re-found our voice and reminded ourselves of the value of this endowed fund to the future generation of genetic counselors, we came back strong. We closed out the year exceeding our goal of $20,000! Thank you to all of our donors who support this effort. It has been an honor to see how generous people can be with their dollars in support of the students and our future genetic counselor colleagues. Every dollar matters and every donor is truly appreciated.

As we move into 2021, we want to thank those who have consistently supported the fund (for the past 3 years) and our community contributors who have donated at least 2 years since the fund was started in 2018.  Thank you for your support!

Finally, Giving Day is right around the corner and we are so close to our $25,000 funding goal. We would love to expand our reach by bringing new donors to the fund, please help us get the word out there.  If you are thinking about giving, please remember “Just Give”. Your donation and support is noticed and appreciated!

Another Reunion Success and Giving Tuesday

November 30, 2020

Our annual reunion looked a little different this year, with program alumni in Zoom rooms across the country. Even with the miles separating us, we still came together, shared stories, supported our current second year students and celebrated the successes of our alumni.

Of course, there was fundraising to be done. Thanks to all who donated on the night of the reunion and for those who are continuing to donate in support of future students.

Giving Tuesday is tomorrow. As we celebrate a holiday season unlike any previous ones, Giving Tuesday allows people to reflect and give back. Thank you to those who choose to support our future graduates. We are proud to be genetic counselors and serve our patients and their families.

Thank you for a great 2019!

December 30, 2019

We kicked off this endowed fund a little over 1 year ago and we have fundraised nearly $10,000 in that short time.

Thank you to each and every one of our donors!

A special shout-out to our "Consistent Community Contributors", who have given in both 2018 and 2019. Your support over the years has been truly appreciated.

Closing out 2019 strong!

December 02, 2019

Thank you to all who participated in the many events (both in person and online) during the month of November. Our alumni came together and raised money both during the NSGC Annual Conference reunion and in the following week, when the word was shared online to bring an additional $250 to the fund.

As many of you know, Tuesday December 3rd is Giving Tuesday. It is a time to give back to organizations who are supporting others, and the UTH Genetic Counseling Research and Education Endowed Fund is a great way to pay it forward during this holiday season.

Our goal is to close out 2019 with over $10,000 in the fund. This would be an amazing success for a fund that is largely supported by UT Genetic Counseling Program alumni. Can you add your name to our fund’s list of supporters this year?

Thank you to each and every one of you as you continue to give in support of the future!

November is the Month of the Genetic Counselor

November 12, 2019

Last Thursday, alumni from nearly 3 decades of UTGCP classes came together to celebrate our successes over the past year, as well as connect as friends and colleagues. It was also a time to meet our future colleagues as the second year students attended the NSGC Annual Conference.

Our fundraising efforts continued, and our total funds now exceed $8000. Thank you to all of the attendees who donate for the first time (and for many, again)!

This Thursday, November 14th is Genetic Counselor Awareness Day. Social media will be busy, as genetic counselors share their work and their love of the profession. In honor of the day, a $5 donation will be made to the Research & Education Fund for each alumnus who posts on social media about how UTGCP was important in their journey to be a genetic counselor. Alumni must include #utgcpfund19 in their social media posting. This is a great opportunity for alumni to share their pride in UTGCP and raise some additional funds.

Thank you for your continued support.

$2500 raised in one day

April 19, 2019

We had a wonderful response to our first Giving Day, raising over $2500 in 24 hours. This includes a match, as the group met the challenge of making 10 or more donations of $100 or more. Thank you to all who participated!

The Giving Day fell on one of the interview days for the class of 2021, which seems fitting as some of the interviewees who were on campus last week will become future UT students. This fund will help support their success, as they are on their educational pathway to become genetic counselors.

Giving Day is Here!!!

April 09, 2019

Your gift of any size will make a big difference for the causes you care about as part of UTHealth’s first-ever Giving Day! As students, parents, alumni, patients, family members, friends, faculty, staff, and leadership join together for this single-day event, we advance health care by helping ensure continued excellence in research, education, and patient care.

The UT Genetic Counseling Program is participating in this event!

Currently, our students bear the vast majority of the financial responsibility for their thesis research projects – which may mean paying out-of-pocket for expenses. Gifts to our Research and Education fund could offset these costs for students, allowing them more freedom in deciding which projects to pursue. In addition, these donations could help students attend life-changing conferences that provide career-defining networking opportunities.

Every gift makes a difference. Every time. Check out the UTHealth Giving Day website (https://givingday.uth.edu) and help the UT GCP community to meet the fundraising challenges to increase the impact of the day of giving.

A Successful Kick-Off!!!

December 03, 2018

It was such an exciting evening in Atlanta as alumni (and friends of the program) reunited during the National Society of Genetic Counselors Annual Conference. We came together as a community to meet new students, connect with old friends, and celebrate the kick-off of the Genetic Counseling Research & Education Fund.

Attendees rose to the challenge that was placed in front of them:

  • Just give
  • Give thoughtfully
  • Give consistently

Nearly $3,000 was raised in the course of a single evening, which puts us well along the path to support future students.

Thank you to all that donated in support of the UT GCP community!
