To help address the opioid crisis, the Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System (HEROES) program provides free, personalized services for people who have overdosed to help them fully recover. In this unique program, our university works with the Houston Police Department, Houston Fire Department, and emergency medical services to identify people most in need of this support and then send health experts right to their door.
Combining the strengths of two UTHealth Houston schools—McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston—the program amasses physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, drug counselors, peer recovery coaches, and first responders to help people experience sustained recoveries.
Support the HEROES program by making a gift for Giving Tuesday to help with prescriptions, transportation, housing, and other resources to enable people recovering from opioid use disorder to establish fulfilling, drug-free lives.
